THE ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION of The Club and The Watchtower Organisation; See Article 34 —and the agreement and covenant of faith and confession which it contains—are of very great importance; and if any part of that is at variance with the order and constitution of the governing body of the Watchtower Society, there will be trouble. But I feel sure that those who signed the Articles understand their proper meaning.
But I am afraid that some of the statements of Rev. J. G. Bennett are not harmonious with that understanding.
In his article, “The Articles of Association are In Accordance with the Constitution of the Governing Body,” in the Watchtower, January 15, 1954, Rev. Bennett writes: “That the Articles of Association are, as was long ago stated, the constitution of the governing body of the organization.” But the “trouble” he foresees is that there is, in the new covenant, a change from that statement in the old covenant.
The change is in paragraph 34, on page 16, of the new covenant.
“It shall be the duty of the governing body of the organization, within its proper jurisdiction, to so interpret the organization and the application of its principles as may be necessary in the judgment of the Governing Body, to the end that the organization may continue to endure and prosper, and the kingdom of God be brought near.”
Thus, the change in the new covenant, to the new interpretation of the old, is that of a qualification of the old rule. The old rule was, “That the governing body of the organization should so interpret the organization and the application of its principles as may be necessary in the judgment of the Governing Body, to the end that the organization may continue to endure and prosper, and the kingdom of God be brought near.” [Articles of Association, p. 11]
Now, I am certain that Rev. Bennett understands what he says; but he surely does not understand his own Article.
We are reminded in that article: “The officers and voting members of the Governing Body shall constitute the Governing Body of the organization.” [Articles of Association, p. 13]
Rev. Bennett writes, “There is no question that the Governing Body is a voting ac619d1d87
